In Rising Above the Gathering Storm [1], a report on a study by the National Academy of Sciences, the main finding is a serious concern that “the scientific and technological building blocks critical to our economic leadership are eroding at a time when many other nations are gathering strength.” For the United States to remain strong in a global economy, it must retain a competitive advantage with regard to innovation in science and technology. This will require a workforce of sufficient size in scientific and technical fields, one that is well-educated and one that is also very creative.
