Problem 8.11

m1 = kg         and         m2 = 1 kg
check, then click the set values and play button to see a vs. t instead.

Please wait for the animation to completely load.

Two carts undergo a perfectly inelastic collision (the carts stick together) as shown in the animation. Also shown is a velocity vs. time graph for each cart.  You can see the acceleration vs. time graph by clicking the check box (position is given in meters and time is given in seconds).  The two carts have equal speed before the collision. You may vary m1 from 0.5 kg to 2 kg.   Restart

  1. For which values of m1 is the magnitude of the change in momentum, | Δp |, of the yellow cart greater than, less than, or equal to the magnitude of the change in momentum, | Δp |, of the bluish cart? Why?

  2. For which values of m1 is the magnitude of the change in acceleration, | Δamax |, of the yellow cart greater than, less than, or equal to the magnitude of the change in acceleration, | Δamax |, of the bluish cart? Why?
